Rum Diary Spiced Rum is a brand I recommend keeping your eye on. Why?, you might ask. Well, if you enjoy watching a team work tirelessly to perfect their craft, who continue to think creatively outside of the box, and stay on top of their game when it comes to being innovative with their rum flavours, it’s really hard not to keep your peepers peeped.

A brief back story of the brand before we dive into the bottle above. The Rum Diary Spiced Rum was created in Fitzroy, Melbourne by Hamish Goonetilleke — Beneath Driver Lane and Bistro Garçon and later joined by Daniel ‘Monkey Magic’ Monk. Together, they have created a range of rums for your taste bud’s pleasure.

Their range is as followed:

Core

  • Traditional spiced rum; a scrumptious tipple which is spiced with local and imported botanicals
  • Royal Fortune rum; a blend of 16 spices, working harmoniously with an imported 5 year aged Caribbean rum to create a delightful drop.

Bartenders edition (150ml bottle)

  • Spiced Negroni
  • Spiced Old Fashioned
  • Spiced Espresso Martini

Experimental Kitchen

  • Edition #1: Cherry Spiced Rum
  • Editon #2: Cocos Nucifera
  • Edition # 3: Rum & Raisin

Edition #3 Rum & Raisin is the first of their trilogy I have had the pleasure of trying, so this is the rum we will be reviewing today.

Created as a collaboration between Rum Diary Spiced Rum and Cavalier Brewing Co. With this rum, you are spoilt with not only experiencing two bespoke brands coming together but also them successfully creating a stand out product. Enjoy it sipped, mixed, and also baked — seriously, this bad boy has been amazing in some home baking during #iso.

  • Smell — Freshly ground coffee, dried fruit, chocolate.
  • Taste — Fruity, cacao, citrusy, tangy with a nice touch of spice. Bloody well-balanced drop and thankfully not as sickly sweet and artificial — which I was worried about.
  • Finish — A juicy finish, very silky, and incredibly moreish.

Let me say, I find this rum very enjoyable to sip neat. It offers an overwhelming feel of comfort and nostalgia that sweeps over you when you take your first few sips — prefect for these colder nights. It is also marvelous as a mixer — perfect in an an Old Fashioned or even as an Espresso Martini. However, as mentioned above, I have been also enjoying this in my baking. It adds the perfect depth and bite to all the rum treats I have used it in (please see my posts, Ti-Rum-Isu and my Rum and Raisin Banana Bread).

I am excited to see what else this team has in store. If you are interested in purchasing any of the above, head to their website: www.rumdiaryspiced.com/buy-it-now
