MADE IN AUSTRALIA — Virtual Rum Club Masterclass

Thoroughly enjoyed my first virtual rum session of 2021 hosted by legend Tom Bulmer and his merry rum distillers from across Australia.

First up, @brixdistillers Urban Cane 2020.

This argicole-style white-rum style spirit is fabulous! Fresh and grassy on the nose, yet creamy and smooth on the palate with some fruity elements, this is a beautiful and, may I add, very sippable spirit. Highly recommend enjoying this in a daiquiri.

Second up, @lordbyrondistillery Pure Single Rum Barrel №2.

This rum differs significantly from their Barrel №1, but in no way is that a bad thing. Packed full of flavour, we have another creamy rum that offers up some serious creme brulee vibes, gentle spice and delightful tropical fruit. I can’t wait to get my hands on a larger bottle when it’s released, as my 20ml sample went far too quickly. I could happily enjoy this neat.

Up next, @beenleighrumdistillers Flood Rum Release.

This sample is their first public release, so I’m feeling pretty spoilt to be sipping on it. Born from a flood that broke through the distillery, this rum is incredibly unique. Musk stick, Turkish delight, and rosewater characteristics lead the way before your palette opens and picks up a beautiful and funky after taste. I have never tasted any rum like this before, and I would be surprised if I ever do again. I could see this working really well in a daiquiri.

@adelaidehillsdistillery Gunnery Australian Spiced.

Gunnery uses pot-distilled spirits derived from sugar cane and molasses. A rum that’s bursting full of Australian native ingredients along with traditional rum spices like nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Intense orange drives this rum forward in the flavour department, which gives me Terry’s choc orange vibes due to the creamy, vanilla and coffee flavour punch. I can see this working gorgeously with ginger beer.

Lastly, @hoocherydistillery Ord River Overproof.

Offers up powerful character of liquorice bullets, raw sugar and vanilla. Silky upon delivery, leaning into an aromatic, dry and ashy mouthful. Giving it a little time to open up your palette, you begin to pick up a golden syrup and burn brown sugar blend. A fab, well balanced, high ABV rum that I think whisky drinkers would enjoy.

I love discovering more Aussie Rum. The future of Australian rum is looking rummy good!
